IT STARTED WITH ACHILLES
In 2015, our story began with a handsome Red Doberman named Achilles and his dog mom, Consuelo.Achilles was struggling with digestive issues, and after talking with his veterinarian, Consuelo decided to try something different. She took kibble out of his diet and started cooking his meals at home with fresh, simple ingredients.Within days, she started noticing a difference. His digestion improved, he had more energy, and most importantly, he seemed happier.That was when something clicked: what we put in their bowls really matters.Achilles was only the beginning.Over the years, Cali, Mia, Griffin, and Ruby joined the family, and home-cooked meals became part of everyday life. We watched our dogs enjoy the fresh food we prepared for them, and eventually, cooking for them stopped feeling like something special we were doing.It was simply how we fed our family.
IT’S NOT DOG FOOD UNTIL IT HITS THE BOWL
And we really do mean family.Long before Achilles Heal was a business, Consuelo would be in the kitchen cooking for the dogs and the whole house would smell like Sunday dinner. Her little nephews would come over, smell what was cooking, and immediately ask if they could have some “dog food.”Her answer?“Go wash your hands.”Once they were sitting at the table, she’d serve them a bowl with one very important warning:“Don’t tell your teachers I’m feeding you dog food.”And then came the line that stuck:“It’s not dog food until it hits the bowl.”It became a family saying because it captured exactly what we had always believed. This wasn’t what most people pictured when they heard dog food. It was real, wholesome food prepared in our kitchen with the same kind of care we put into feeding the rest of our family.Years later, that little joke around the dinner table would become part of the heart of Achilles Heal.
FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS
In 2023, Desirae and Consuelo asked themselves a simple question:What if we shared this with other families, too? By then, they had spent years cooking for their own dogs. They knew how much care went into every grocery trip, every ingredient, every meal, and every bowl.So they took something that had been part of their family for years and turned it into a small family business.Achilles Heal was born in our kitchen, inspired by the dogs we love and built around something we’ve believed since the very beginning: they deserve to be cared for like family.That hasn’t changed as we’ve grown.Every meal and treat we make still carries a little piece of where this all started. Achilles. Cali. Mia. Griffin. Ruby. A kitchen that smelled like Sunday dinner. A couple of nephews eating “dog food” at the table.And a family that loved its dogs enough to start paying closer attention to what went into their bowls.Today, when customers ask us what we put in our meals and treats that gets their dogs so excited, our answer is still the same:
LOVE. We put love in everything.
And when you feed Achilles Heal, you’re not simply buying something for your dog. You’re becoming a little part of the AH Family, too.
After all, it’s not dog food until it hits the bowl.
Meet The Family
Achilles may be the name behind Achilles’ Heal, but he’s only one member of the pack. Meet Achilles, Cali, Mia, Griffin, and Ruby, the five dogs at the heart of everything.
Achilles was our favorite redhead and the reason Achilles Heal was born. In 2015, we began cooking for him, and his love of food, especially cheese, inspired one of our most beloved treats, Cheezy Bones. He even taught himself to say “Mawm” and he had us completely wrapped around his paw. Achilles crossed the Rainbow Bridge in February 2023, his legacy lives on in every bowl we make and every dog we love.
Griffin came to us as a foster with his siblings through the rescue, it didn’t take long for us to realize he was never leaving. He had already stolen our hearts and officially became part of our family. His mom is a Doberman and, as we discovered through DNA testing, his dad is a Great Pyrenees. Griffin definitely inherited the best of both: he is a patient food lover who adores all the pretty girls in our family (especially Desirae, who he loves like she’s his mom).
Desi and Consuelo are a Colorado-based mother-daughter duo who have always shared a deep love for dogs, especially Dobermans. To them, dogs have never been “just pets.” They’re family, loyal companions, and a constant source of comfort and joy. Achilles Heel Dog Food grew from that shared love and their belief that every dog deserves food made with the same care and intention we give to the people closest to us.
Cali came to us after being rescued from a heartbreaking situation, severely overweight and unable to walk more than a few steps without needing to lay down. After 42 days of eating Achilles Heal, she had lost 32 pounds and reached a healthy weight, the greatest transformation was seeing her run, play, and chase the dragon fly’s that came out at night! She truly has a magnificent transformation!
Ruby came to us as a foster with her sibling, watching the way she loved Mia made the decision to adopt her almost impossible to resist. We knew we would have to say goodbye to Mia in the near future, we couldn’t imagine taking away the love and companionship Ruby gave her. Ruby was always kissing Mia, hugging her, and staying right by her side. When Mia crossed the Rainbow Bridge, Ruby continued loving our family with that same beautiful, unconditional heart.
We weren’t ready for Mia when we adopted her from the rescue, we had just lost Cali. We believe Cali may have helped lead Mia to us. Mia was beautiful, funny, and had the most unforgettable smile; she adored all the “littles” in our family, especially her best friend, our little niece, and we always called her our “pretty sister.” She loved anything and everything edible, snuggled with anyone and everyone!
